Celebrating Delano’s Artistic Spirit: A Year-Round Guide to Local Arts and Culture

Delano, Minnesota, boasts a rich tapestry of arts and cultural events that reflect the community’s creative spirit. From annual festivals to ongoing art projects, there’s always something to inspire residents and visitors alike.

Delano Sculpture & Blues Fest

Each year, the Delano Area Council for Arts and Culture hosts the Sculpture & Blues Fest, a celebration that combines visual arts with live music. Attendees can tour new and existing sculptures, enjoy performances by bands like the Joyann Parker Band and Trent Romens Band, and explore a variety of art vendors. This event is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Central MN Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Community Mural Project

In honor of Delano’s 150th anniversary, local artist LeAnna Wurzer leads a community mural project. Residents of all ages are invited to paint 3″x3″ canvases that will form a large-scale mosaic mural. The completed artwork will be unveiled at the Annual Community Art Show in October and permanently displayed in the Delano Public Library. This initiative is supported by Arts & Cultural Heritage Funds from Minnesota’s Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment.

Historic 4th of July Celebration

Delano hosts Minnesota’s oldest and largest Fourth of July celebration, founded in 1857. The festivities include live music, American Legion baseball games, and a historic parade, all honoring both the nation’s independence and Delano’s community spirit.

Delano Community Band

Established in 2017, the Delano Community Band is an inter-generational, all-volunteer concert band that rehearses weekly and performs a diverse repertoire spanning various musical genres. The band provides growth and performance opportunities for area musicians and enriches the local cultural landscape.

Public Art Initiatives

The Delano Area Council for Arts and Culture spearheads projects like the ‘Spark the Power of Art’ initiative, which transforms utility boxes around town into canvases showcasing local artists’ work. This effort not only beautifies the community but also makes art accessible to all residents.

Delano’s commitment to arts and culture is evident in these events and initiatives, fostering a vibrant community where creativity thrives year-round.
